Our Art Therapist Counsellor Nicole Crouch, CCC specializes in child adult and family counselling
The counselling process is one of uncovering unconscious habits of thought and action and making decisions through investigating, making discoveries, and learning about the self.
A holistic approach is one that considers the whole self with reference to the mind, body and spirit; the intersection between the nervous system and the body, and how cultural learnings and family experiences have impacted ones well being through consciously and unconsciously learned habits, which may be barriers to health.
Art therapy is a versatile tool that anyone can use, which provides opportunities for exploring beauty and experience, and for engaging the mind and body in channelling vitality toward goals.
For children aged 3-13 engages children in creatively working with and through their emotions while exploring and learning about who they are, with the goals of skills-based learning and healthy emotional development.
Before meeting with kids, I meet with one or both (or more) parents for a 50 minute session where we explore behaviours, goals and potential sources of struggle. This is then followed by an individual session with the child. Each child session is followed by a 15 minute follow-up phone check in the next day or shortly after to share emotional themes from the sessions and to discuss home strategies. After the first child solo session, we would discuss whether to continue with solo child sessions, and at what point we might have a family follow up session.
A family follow up session is a 50 minute child-focused play therapy session which includes one of their caregivers. This gives me the opportunity to support you and your child through power struggles and conflicts.
Is a trauma-informed guided art process that facilitates self counsel and integrative healing for clients. This is recommended for physical and/or emotional trauma work. Trauma can be acute or chronic, and it is when the body learns an autonomic nervous response to normal stimulus, based on a specific difficult event or chronic experiences of various kinds. Some sources of trauma, according to Pat Ogden who is the creator of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy method and founder of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, include captivity, attack, loss, sexual abuse, pre- and perinatal experiences, persecution, vicarious trauma, domestic violence, climate change, religious trauma, inside threat, social media, pandemic, disaster, moral injury, neglect, accidents, asylum seeking, perpetration, immigration, ritual abuse and torture, medical/surgical, transgenerational/historical, oppression and racialized trauma, terrorism, and colonization. This approach to therapy is useful as a means of leveraging the body’s somatic wisdom for healing and extra-linguistic processing.
