What if moving more easily wasn’t about trying harder, stretching further, or pushing your body into a new position—but about becoming more curious about how you already move?
This is at the heart of The Feldenkrais Method®, a gentle approach to movement and learning that uses awareness to help us discover new possibilities in the way we move, feel, and inhabit our bodies.
This fall, Francesca Frewer is offering a 6-week series of Awareness Through Movement® (ATM®) sessions—a chance to slow down, tune in, and explore movement in a way that can create meaningful shifts in both body and mind.
So, what exactly is Feldenkrais?
The Feldenkrais Method® is a somatic movement practice developed by physicist, engineer, martial artist, and educator Moshe Feldenkrais. Rather than prescribing a particular “correct” way to move, the method invites us to become more aware of our own movement patterns.
The underlying idea is simple: our nervous system is constantly learning.
Many of us develop habitual ways of moving, sitting, standing, breathing, and responding to our environment. Over time, some of these patterns can become less supportive. We may unconsciously brace, overuse certain muscles, favour one side of the body, or move around an old injury.
Feldenkrais uses gentle, exploratory movement to bring these patterns into awareness. With greater awareness comes greater choice—and the possibility of finding ways of moving that are more comfortable, coordinated, and efficient.
As Francesca describes it, Feldenkrais works with the “incredible intelligence of the nervous system” to build new possibilities for movement and help free us from habitual patterns that can contribute to strain, recurring injuries, chronic tension, and other imbalances.
What is Awareness Through Movement?
Awareness Through Movement® is the group-based side of the Feldenkrais Method.
An ATM class is not a workout in the conventional sense. You won’t be asked to force a stretch, hold a difficult pose, or perform movements perfectly.
Instead, you’ll be guided through a series of gentle, simple movements with specific attention.
You might explore how your head moves in relation to your spine, how your pelvis participates in movement, or how different parts of your body coordinate with one another. The movements are generally done slowly and comfortably, with plenty of opportunity to pause, rest, notice, and explore.
The emphasis is less on doing the movement correctly and more on noticing what you discover.
Over time, this process can help your nervous system recognize alternatives to familiar patterns and develop more efficient ways of organizing movement.
Many people describe the experience after a class as a kind of “nervous system reset”—a feeling of greater spaciousness, ease, grounding, or internal equilibrium.
Why might someone want to try Feldenkrais?
You don’t need to have an injury or a particular physical problem to benefit from Awareness Through Movement.
People are often drawn to Feldenkrais because they want to feel more at home in their bodies.
You might be curious about Feldenkrais if you:
- Carry a lot of tension or feel like you’re frequently “holding” your body
- Want to improve your posture without constantly reminding yourself to “sit up straight”
- Experience recurring aches, strains, or movement limitations
- Are recovering from an injury and want to explore more supportive movement patterns
- Want to move more comfortably as you age
- Participate in sports, dance, yoga, or another physical practice and want to refine your coordination
- Feel disconnected from your body or spend much of your day in your head
- Are interested in nervous-system regulation and embodied awareness
- Simply want to move with more ease, freedom, and curiosity
For Francesca, Feldenkrais became personal through her own experience as a professional contemporary dancer. After a career-impacting back injury, she discovered the method and found it fundamental to her recovery. It subsequently became an ongoing practice that helped her explore embodiment, resilience, and movement at increasingly deeper levels.
Her experience also speaks to something important about Feldenkrais: the goal isn’t simply to recover from what’s wrong. It’s to discover what’s possible.
From tension and habit to choice and possibility
We often think of movement as something our muscles do. But every movement is also an expression of how our nervous system organizes information, sensation, attention, and action.
When a particular movement pattern becomes habitual, it can begin to feel like the only way to move.
Feldenkrais offers an opportunity to interrupt that automaticity.
Through small, gentle experiments, you can begin to notice: What happens if I do this differently? What becomes easier? What am I doing that I don’t need to do? Is there another way?
That process of noticing can be surprisingly powerful.
Rather than fighting against your body, you begin to listen to it.
Rather than imposing a new pattern, you give your nervous system the information and space it needs to discover one.
And rather than striving for a perfect posture or ideal movement, you develop something more valuable: the ability to sense, adapt, and choose.
Meet Francesca Frewer
Francesca Frewer is a Guild-Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner™ and lifelong movement enthusiast. Her background as a professional contemporary dancer gives her a deep appreciation for movement, coordination, and the remarkable adaptability of the human body.
Her approach is grounded in the belief that we all deserve to feel comfortable and at home in our bodies, and that movement and touch can be powerful entry points for supporting a balanced nervous system.
One participant describes working with Francesca this way:
“Francesca is an incredibly skillful and attentive guide in what I think is the practical magic of ATM. Her guidance and commitment creates a container for deep transformation; I am forever grateful for coming across her and her work.”
That sense of attentive guidance is central to Awareness Through Movement. You aren’t expected to figure it all out yourself. You simply arrive, listen, move, and explore.
Join the upcoming 6-week Awareness Through Movement series
If you’ve been curious about Feldenkrais—or simply feel like your body and nervous system could use some more space, ease, and attention—this 6-week series is an opportunity to explore the practice in a supportive, progressive way.
Across six sessions, you’ll be invited to develop a more refined awareness of how you move and how your body organizes itself.
The aim isn’t to add another thing to your list of things to “do right.” Instead, it’s an invitation to slow down enough to notice what is already happening—and discover that you may have more options than you realized.
With regular practice, Awareness Through Movement can become more than something you experience during a class. It can give you tools for maintaining more supportive movement patterns, building resilience, and bringing greater awareness into everyday life.
Feel more free in your body. Move with greater ease. Become more grounded in mind, body, and spirit.
Come explore what becomes possible when awareness leads the way.
