How Craniosacral Therapy Can Support Healing Beyond Words
By Maya Brstilo, MPCC-P, CST
“I’ve done the therapy. I’ve read the books. I understand my patterns. So why do I still feel anxious, exhausted, disconnected, or stuck?”
It’s a question I hear often.
Many of the people who come to see me are incredibly self-aware. They’ve spent years reflecting, learning, growing, and trying to heal. They understand where their anxiety comes from. They can identify their attachment patterns. They know their triggers.
And yet something still doesn’t feel resolved.
Not because they’re doing anything wrong.
But because healing is not always a cognitive process.
Many of us have become experts at living from the neck up. We think, plan, analyze, and push through, often at the expense of ourselves and our bodies.
Life has a way of asking more of us than we sometimes feel capable of carrying. We are asked to support ourselves while caring for others, maintain a career, look after our health, show up for our families and friendships, manage our homes, pursue our goals, and somehow keep smiling through it all.
The pressure is relentless.
We become tired. Our bodies become tired. And our emotions? We often don’t have time to feel them, let alone seek support for them.
So we keep going.
We disconnect from ourselves. We numb. We swallow our anger, our grief, our worry, and our fear. We tell ourselves we’ll deal with it later. We push through another day, another week, another year.
And when we finally reach a breaking point, we often assume something is wrong with us.
But what if nothing is wrong with you?
What if your body is simply responding exactly as it was designed to?
Every emotion we experience has a physiological impact. Stress changes our breathing patterns. Anxiety can create tension in our jaw, neck, shoulders, and digestive system. Chronic overwhelm can affect sleep, energy, concentration, and our ability to feel present in our own lives.
When something becomes too much for too long, our bodies adapt in order to help us survive.
Muscles tighten.
Breathing becomes shallow.
We become vigilant.
We disconnect from sensations that feel too painful or overwhelming.
Over time, these adaptations can become so familiar that we no longer notice them. They simply become the way we move through the world.
Psychiatrist and trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk explored this reality in his groundbreaking book The Body Keeps the Score. His work helped many people understand something they had felt for years but struggled to explain: even when we understand our experiences intellectually, our bodies may still be carrying the effects of them.
One of the most validating ideas from his work is that healing is not simply about understanding what happened to us.

Many people know exactly why they feel the way they do. They can explain their anxiety. They understand the roots of their people-pleasing. They recognize how past experiences shaped them. Yet their shoulders remain tense, their sleep remains disrupted, their stomach tightens before difficult conversations, their body still responds as though the threat is present.
This doesn’t mean they have failed at healing.
It simply means that words and insight, while incredibly valuable, are not always the whole story.
Sometimes the body needs to be included in the conversation too.
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on modality rooted in osteopathic medicine that supports the nervous system and the body’s natural capacity for rest, regulation, and healing.
For many people, that alone can feel unfamiliar.
Craniosacral therapy can offer the kind of deep settling that allows the body to stop bracing. The kind of rest that lets the nervous system realize, even for a moment, that it no longer has to stay on high alert.
For many clients, Craniosacral Therapy becomes an opportunity to experience that feeling for the first time in years.
During a session, you’ll lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table surrounded by blankets, dim lighting, and calming music.
The pace is intentionally slow.
There is nowhere to perform.
Nothing to fix.
Nothing you need to get right.
Using gentle touch, I work with areas such as the head, jaw, neck, sacrum, diaphragm, throat, and hips—places where many people unconsciously hold tension and protective patterns.
Craniosacral Therapy offers something different. A chance to simply be.
To be supported without needing to explain.
To notice what happens when your body is no longer working so hard.
Often clients arrive without realizing just how much effort they have been expending to hold themselves together.
Then something begins to soften.
A jaw unclenches.
A breath deepens.
The shoulders drop.
The mind becomes quieter.
Sometimes it can feel like hearing your body speak for the first time.
And often, what it has to say makes perfect sense.
Why Combine Counselling and Craniosacral Therapy
Healing doesn’t happen in separate compartments. Our thoughts influence our bodies. Our bodies influence our emotions. Our emotions influence the way we relate to ourselves and others.
Everything is connected.
As a counsellor, I’ve spent the last couple of years helping people make sense of their experiences through conversation, reflection, and insight. Those conversations can be incredibly healing.
But I’ve also witnessed something else. Many people understand exactly why they feel the way they do.
They’ve read the books.
They’ve listened to the podcasts.
They’ve spent years trying to heal.
Yet something still feels stuck.
Not because they haven’t worked hard enough.
But because healing sometimes requires more than understanding.
It requires an experience.
It requires feeling safety rather than simply talking about it.
This is why I love combining counselling and Craniosacral Therapy. During sessions, there is space not only for the body to soften and unwind, but also for curiosity, reflection and emotional processing.
As sensations, emotions, memories, or insights arise, we can explore them together in real time.
Sometimes a client notices tightness in their chest and realizes how much grief they’ve been carrying.
Sometimes tears emerge without a clear explanation.
Sometimes nothing needs to be analyzed at all.
Sometimes being witnessed while your body finally lets go is healing enough.
You do not have to choose between talking and feeling.
You do not have to choose between emotional healing and physical healing. Together, we create space for both.
Why I Offer This Work
As someone who has spent years supporting people through counselling, I never expected a hands-on approach to become such an important part of my work.
Yet time and again, I have witnessed what happens when people are given permission to slow down. I have watched clients arrive feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, disconnected from themselves, and carrying burdens they have held alone for far too long.
And I have watched something soften. Not because they were fixed. Not because they tried harder. But because they finally had a space where they no longer needed to hold everything by themselves.
That is one of the reasons I love this work so deeply.
Sometimes words are exactly what we need.
And sometimes healing begins in the spaces beyond words.
And sometimes healing begins with a quiet room, gentle support, and the realization that your body has been speaking to you all along.
If you’ve been carrying more than your share for a long time, I would be honoured to help you listen.
