Uplevel Your Health

Receive 5 of the Local Health team's best, easy-to-do health tips that won't take a lot of time but will make a bit impact!

Though most of us feel sad to say goodbye to summer, September 1st can bring with it a sigh of relief for the comforts of a routine, and the windy whisper of excitement for the time of the year that I often call, the “New” New Years.

There is something special about the transition from summer into fall. Energetically, late summer’s shift into fall is a time that calls on us to harvest what we have planted throughout the last eight months and shift gears from busy summer days to the slower, more grounded pace of fall.

Instead of waiting until January to make those wellness changes, why not use September as your opportunity for a fresh start?

Here are my top fall wellness tips to help you head into autumn feeling energized, supported and ready for the season ahead.

1. Prioritize Your Health & Wellness

September is when the calendars start filling up again — and that includes ours!

As people return to routines and start thinking about how to use their extended health benefits before the end of the year, healthcare and wellness appointments can book up quickly. If you’ve been putting off that massage, acupuncture treatment, naturopathic appointment or other wellness service, now is the time to get it on the calendar.

Rather than waiting until you need an appointment, consider pre-booking at least one appointment over the next few months. It’s a simple way to prioritize your health and make sure you have time set aside for yourself during an increasingly busy season.

Your future self will thank you!

2. Get Ahead of Your Vitamin D Needs

As the days get shorter and we head toward the darker months, Vitamin D becomes an especially important consideration for many people living in British Columbia.

Research has found that a significant percentage of people in BC have Vitamin D levels below recommended thresholds. Your individual needs, however, can vary considerably depending on your current Vitamin D status, diet, sun exposure and other factors.

That’s why rather than guessing at your dose, consider working with your medical doctor or one of our Naturopathic Doctors to determine your Vitamin D levels and develop a personalized supplementation plan.

Starting the conversation in September or October can be particularly helpful. Getting ahead of the seasonal shift may help support your health before we enter the darker winter months.

Vitamin D is also frequently discussed in relation to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and seasonal changes in mood. While Vitamin D is not a stand-alone treatment for SAD, assessing and addressing a deficiency can be one piece of a broader winter wellness plan.

If you’re wondering whether you should be taking Vitamin D — and how much — talk to a healthcare professional about what’s appropriate for you.

3. Find Movement You Actually Love

Fall is the perfect time to rethink what exercise and movement mean to you.

Exercise doesn’t have to look like 30 minutes on a treadmill or hitting a specific number of reps. The best movement is often the movement you actually enjoy — because when you love it, you’re much more likely to keep doing it.

Even better? Move with your community.

There are some great classes at our yoga and movement studio, Local Yoga Studio, that are fun, inspiring and maybe even a little sweaty! You can also find fantastic options at local recreation centres — Zumba, anyone?

And there’s good news for those of us who love an outdoor walk: with the time change happening later in the fall, there may still be opportunities to get outside after your workday while there’s daylight.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s finding movement that makes you feel good and building it into your regular routine.

Try a dance class. Go for a hike. Take a yoga class. Walk with a friend. Ride your bike. Whatever gets you moving and leaves you feeling better than when you started counts.

4. Skip the Cleanse — Give Your Digestion a Reset

Summer is for enjoying life — and yes, that can sometimes mean a little more ice cream, restaurant meals, cocktails, barbecues and indulgence than usual.

So when September arrives, you may be tempted to jump into a restrictive cleanse or detox.

Instead, consider taking a more sustainable approach to your digestive health.

September can be an excellent time to return to the basics: nourishing meals, plenty of water, regular movement, adequate sleep and a diet that makes you feel your best.

For some people, there may also be an opportunity to look more closely at food sensitivities.

I’ve seen many patients find meaningful changes in their digestion and overall wellbeing after identifying foods that may not be agreeing with them. Some food reactions can be subtle or delayed, making them difficult to identify simply by paying attention to how you feel immediately after eating.

In certain circumstances, a blood test may help identify foods to consider eliminating temporarily. A 2–3 month elimination period, followed by thoughtful reintroduction, can sometimes help refine and personalize your diet.

The goal isn’t to create a longer list of foods you can’t eat. It’s to better understand what works for your individual body and build a way of eating that is nourishing, sustainable and enjoyable.

If you’re curious about whether food sensitivities could be contributing to your digestive concerns, chat with me or one of our other Naturopathic Doctors to learn more.

Make September Your Wellness Reset

The beauty of the “New” New Year is that you don’t have to wait until January to start fresh.

September gives us a natural opportunity to pause, take stock and ask ourselves:

What do I want to carry forward into the next season — and what am I ready to leave behind?

Maybe that’s finally booking the healthcare appointment you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s getting your Vitamin D levels checked, finding a movement class you love, or giving your digestion some extra attention.

Small, intentional changes now can make a big difference in how you feel when the darker days of winter arrive.

So welcome, September.

The harvest is here. The routine is returning. And your fall wellness reset starts now.
